The world’s 59 species of eagles are found on every continent except Antarctica. There are four major groups of eagles: fish eagles, booted eagles, snake eagles and giant forest eagles. America’s eagles are the Bald Eagle, which is a fish eagle, and the Golden Eagle, which is a booted eagle.
The Eagle Knights chose as their emblem and guiding spirit this fierce bird, recognized as a symbol of the Sun.
The Aztecs believed that in creating the world, their Gods gave their hearts and blood to the sun, and that as the God’s beneficiaries, they must make a similar sacrifice to keep the universe in perfect balance.
One way to assure the Aztecs’ bloodthirsty gods a steady stream of living victims to sacrifice was to capture them on the battlefield. As well as the Jaguar Knights, the Eagle Knights were part of an elite military corps living in the palace at Tenochtitlan.
The central design of this piece represents an Eagle Knight wearing his battle eagle costume. On the border, eagle motifs are mixed with sword motifs. All are inspired from Aztecs traditional designs.
